About Us
Horne Coupar LLP is a second generation law firm, with partners Mark Horne K.C. and John Coupar succeeding their fathers, who established the practice in 1944. These family connections have created a culture of respect, loyalty and consideration for all members of the firm. The firm has a strong presence in the Greater Victoria community with its support of arts and culture. The partners have also made protection of the environment a priority, contributing to the global organization “1% for the Planet” since 2007 (with 1% of gross revenues annually donated to local environmental organizations).
At Horne Coupar LLP, you are not simply a student, associate or staff member – you are part of a family, the members of which look out for each other. The partners work to maintain a family culture by providing weekly opportunities to gather and check in with each other in a social setting. Further, if you have any questions or issues you can feel comfortable talking to any member of our firm to work through it and come to a solution. We also offer weekly mentoring sessions where our students and lawyers can discuss questions they may have about the practice of law or issues on a client file.
Horne Coupar LLP has a local and national reputation for excellence in the estate planning and litigation fields. While we specialize in planning, you will quickly discover that planning touches a number of practice areas. In this regard, the firm has a strong bench of corporate and family law practitioners complementing our estate planning and estate administration team. Should you have an opportunity to work with Horne Coupar LLP, your time here will expose you to a comprehensive legal experience that will build a solid foundation in the practice of law.

TESTIMONIALS:
When looking for places to article, I wanted to learn from the best. Horne Coupar consistently came out on top as Victoria’s most established trusts and estates firm, and I was immediately struck by both the breadth and depth of knowledge and experience at the firm. But beyond its impressive reputation, I soon discovered a culture that prides itself on being a “family” firm. This means that there is a strong sense of community, built on shared values and long-term relationships. This sense of community is fostered in many ways. Thursdays mean ‘Chambers’ at 4 pm, a chance to unwind with colleagues (and imbibe, if desired!). Fridays start with a firm-wide breakfast, fostering connections and fueling the final weekday. Weekly mentoring sessions provide invaluable guidance from colleagues and senior lawyers. But most importantly, Horne Coupar prioritizes a healthy “work-like balance.” The partners understand that well-rested lawyers and staff create a superior and more efficient work product. This approach has led to remarkably low turnover, fostering strong and productive relationships over time and creating a genuinely “boutique” experience for clients. Decades of expertise combined with a collaborative, people-centred approach is truly the “secret sauce” that has solidified Horne Coupar’s time-honoured reputation for delivering exceptional outcomes for the people and community it serves. I feel fortunate and proud to be part of the Horne Coupar family. – Austin Horn
I chose Horne Coupar for my 2L summer due to its reputation as a top Victoria firm focusing on trusts and estates. Despite its focus on trusts and estates, these areas include exposure to litigation, tax, corporate law and more. I gained substantial exposure to many areas of law and received mentorship from lawyers and partners at the firm. Entering the legal world as a student can be intimidating, but the environment at Horne Coupar is open and supportive. I felt grateful to be working with such a kind group of people in my first law position. I was included in weekly mentorship meetings, encouraged to participate, and my questions and ideas were respected. The Horne Coupar team deeply respects one another and works collaboratively, acknowledging that the different strengths of lawyers at the firms are invaluable resources. I felt that the lawyers around me genuinely cared about my learning and development and were open to giving me work in areas of personal interest. Working at Horne Coupar has the added bonus of Friday breakfasts and chambers on Thursdays, where colleagues can have drinks and socialize. My experience honed my legal research, document drafting, client interaction, and analytical thinking skills. With the knowledge and training I received during my four-month work term, I feel more confident entering my third year of law school and will continue developing the skills I acquired at Horne Coupar as an articling student next year in Vancouver. I wish Horne Coupar had a Vancouver office, as I was sad to have to leave! – Sophia Switzer
